Hoko hoko (Maori): to exchange, trade, buy, sell, barter.
Poco loco (Spanish): just a little crazy
Hokoloko was born from a shared love of everyday creativity and a lot of curiosity about how far exchanging could go. We’re interested in using the internet to bring together like minded people to help organise real life. The whole project was built on exchange and collaboration, with absolutely no money, so we know it works!
The Hokoloko team is: Emily Oliver and Charlotte Webster (founders, and art guerilla’s) Aidan O’Donnell and Vince Rowe (web developers with a knack for knowing just how people really tick), Tim Godwin (graphic designer / artist / musician / all round cracking creative) and Vivienne Edkins (communications and events angel).
The Manifesto
If it aint fun then it aint worth doing That's not lazy, creative stress is good; work 68 days straight if you're doing something you're digging. But there's an increasing realisation that work and life happens best when it's characterised by social behavior*, ie. what people naturally want to do, rather than economic models, ie. cash is king. (* for the most articulate, insightful, inspiring essay on this see - Yochai Benkler: The Wealth of networks)
Celebrate creativity and collaboration...it's what characterises life. Art should not be elitist, we're all every day creators. So don't just show, share.
Explore alternative economies and places to share our art. We're genuinely interested in exchanging our work for more than just money.
Be (cross) disciplined. Across the (art) world people are forgetting disciplines, labels, and expected behaviour. Work together, surprise one another, you are more than the sum of your parts. Even if they are perfectly pretty parts.
Getting it on(line) / getting off(line)... 'the power of the internet is in changing the real world' (Paul Miller: Weary giants and new technology); find like-minded people, communicate widely and quickly to make life in some way, well just a little happier. So we have a home here on t'internet but our dancing feet are definitely on terra firma.
